Williamsburg, Glendale in final
by Matt Michelone
WILLIAMSBURG — There’s no place like home.
Just ask the Williamsburg girls basketball team, who has spent almost the entirety of the first third of the season seeing the inside of a bus on gameday.
“I said to my coaches ‘boy does it feel nice to be at home,’ and those bus rides are very long,” Williamsburg coach Amy Hileman said with a laugh. “I get bus sick. I know the community was upset that we had a bunch of away games to start, so it was nice to see the people show up and support us.”
The wait was worth it for the Lady Blue Pirate faithful as they won their home debut in convincing fashion over Moshannon Valley, 62-12, in their opening match up in the Lady Blue Pirate Holiday Tournament at Williamsburg High School.
Williamsburg will get Glendale in tonight’s championship after the Lady Vikings knocked off Northern Bedford, 58-36. Kyla Campbell led all scorers with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Olivia Reese contributed 21 points.
Williamsburg got things going about midway through the first quarter on a Kendel Norris turnaround jumper which helped set off a 30-4 run which spanned a quarter and half.
Much of that damage came at the hands of freshman Jayla Woodruff who came up with a turnaround jumper and a turnover for another bucket to make help make it 34-9 after just one half.
Damsels coach Jillian Kane noted that much of her team’s early struggles come from having to rebuild things from last season.
“I’m starting from scratch with my own program,” she said. “They’re finally playing my defense, but offensively we still have to work on our shots. Take better shots, be more confident, and we’ve got to take care of the basketball.”
Woodruff lead all scorers with 17 points and was one of three Lady Pirates in double figures. Sophomore Morgan Webb added 15 for the home team while junior Hannah Brenneman added 11.
“That’s the exciting part about this group,” Hileman said. “I don’t go by seniority. The goal is to constantly roll people in and out, and we’re not losing anything.”
