Glendale upends West Branch 44-20

Glendale upends West Branch 44-20 by Tyler Kolesar
ALLPORT — The Glendale Vikings came into L.T. Drivas Memorial Field Friday night and took down the West Branch Warriors 44-20. The Vikings wound up with 257 yards rushing on the night. Seth Dudurich paced the way with 136 yards on 16 carries and two scores, while running back Cory Johnston got 85 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
“I think at this point in the season, teams start to discover themselves a bit,” Glendale head coach Dave Trexler said. “And you try and close the gap on every mistakes. West Branch had some mistakes tonight and we have the first three games. But it comes down to the turnovers. (West Branch) is a really good team and that quarterback is very special and they’re well coached. But we did some good things tonight and we really came together.”
“The disgusting part is that we knew that’s what they were going to do,” West Branch head coach Kevin Hubler said of Glendale’s running attack. “There’s two teams we’ve played so far where we knew what was coming — Mo Valley was going to run it right down your throat, Glendale is going to try and run it down your throat. Stop them and you win. If you don’t stop them, this happens. But it goes back to what I’ve been saying all year. We’re making too many mistakes. We’re not tackling on defense. We’re not aggressive and we’re making mistakes after mistakes on offense.”
Glendale’s defense forced a three-and-out on West Branch’s first possession of the game and then proceeded to go 73 yards on 12 plays, as Johnston cashed in his first touchdown of the night with a 15 yard run up the middle with 4:32 left in the first quarter. Ethan Cavalet’s extra point gave the Vikings a 7-0 lead.
West Branch got the offense going through the air like it has all season on its next possession — picking up first downs with receptions by Travis Rothrock and Noah Hoffner from quarterback Ayden Gutierrez. But on fourth-and-1 at the Vikings 27-yard line, the Glendale defense came up big and stuffed Gutierrez on a QB keeper. to get the ball back.
Both teams traded possessions and the Warriors were then forced to punt early in the second quarter at their own 12-yard line.
That’s when an errant snap went over punter Eddie Dale’s head.
Dale was able to recover and get the punt off, but it was partially blocked and went right into the hands of Viking Garret Misiura in the end zone for an easy touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, it was literally the same scenario for West Branch — another punt deep in its own territory and another bad snap. This time, however, the ball went out of the end zone for a safety and a 16-0 Glendale lead with 9:24 left in the second quarter.
The Vikings got the lead up to 23-0 in the second quarter whenever Baine Seilhamer picked off Gutierrez. Three plays after that, Dudurich punched it in from 15 yards with 5:26 left in the first half.
West Branch answered quickly whenever Gutierrez found Trent Bellomy over the middle in stride for a 45-yard TD. After a penalty after the score, West Branch’s two-point try was unsuccessful but the lead was cut to 23-6.
The Vikings then took momentum into the half and Seth Dudurich scored from seven yards out with 14 second left in the half, giving the visitors a 30-6 lead.
Glendale kept its foot on the accelerator with its first possession in the second half, going nine plays for 60 yards and capping it off with a Johnston 14-yard TD to put the Vikings up 37-6 with 7:58 left in the third quarter.
West Branch finally got the running game going in the second half, as Will Herring scored early in the fourth quarter to cut the Glendale lead to 37-13.
“If we can get Will (Herring) some creases, that’s what you’ll see,” Hubler said. “He’s quick and he runs hard. We’ve got to give him those creases but it’s a balance. We can’t rely on throwing the ball 70 times. That’s not going to work. We have to be able to mix it up. You can see when we are able to mix it up, we’re hard to defend. But it comes back to making mistakes and being behind the sticks. Any offense is tough when it’s third-and-20.”
Both teams each scored once more in the fourth quarter, as Misiura found Seilhamer over the middle for a 14-yard touchdown for the Vikings, to which Trexler was pleased.
“I think we have a little hidden gem in that we can throw the ball,” Trexler said. “We’re just blessed with some very big, physical running backs and some speed, so we sort of play into our strengths. We know if we want to get to where we want to be, we’re going to have to throw the ball and we can. I’m proud that we can when we need to.”
Herring then punched one in from one yard out with 5:35 left to play to set the final at 44-20.
“I’m just proud of the effort,” Trexler said. “They’re just committed to getting better and the effort is there. They’ve been down before and they’re resilient. We try not to pay attention to the score as much because it is what it is. But we want to win and we look for that effort. It’s there.”
With the win, Glendale moves to 3-1 on the year and hosts Claysburg-Kimmel next week.
“We’re going to enjoy it for what it is but we’re focused on getting better each week,” Trexler said. “It’s only week 4 and everybody is shooting to get better and everybody is shooting for what’s after the regular season. But we just want to focus in on next week.”
West Branch falls to 0-4 and host Mount Union next week.
“Mount Union, on paper, it looks like they have a really tough defense,” Hubler said. “We’re going to have our hands full and we’ve got to play better defense. We have to quit making mistakes on offense to let us score more points. If we do that, we’re going to be ok. But if we don’t, we’re going to continue to struggle.”

Blue Devils keep it going with another ICC win by Jon Fleck
FLINTON — It’s been a while since Bellwood-Antis has lost an Inter-County Conference game.
The Blue Devils started their string of consecutive ICC wins with a victory over Glendale late in the 2015 season and ran it to 29 straight Friday night with another win over Glendale.
Bellwood rolled up 411 yards of offense and held the Vikings to just 80 in a 48-0 win at Dr. Roy F. Baker Athletic Field.
Play of the game: Starting deep in their own end in the second quarter, Nick Plank caught a screen pass, headed to the Bellwood sideline, weaved his way around a couple defenders and bounced off two more for a 34-yard gain. The play kickstarted an 86-yard drive that put BA up 28-0 just seconds before halftime.
Players of the game: Zach Mallon and Plank each scored two touchdowns. Mallon finished with 87 yards rushing and 46 yards receiving. Plank ran for 76 yards to go along with his 34 yard catch and run.
Most vital statistic: Bellwood held Glendale to minus 9 yards rushing.
Bellwood coach Nick Lovrich: “We won the game in our practices. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday were very business-like. The guys did what they’re supposed to do, and (Friday) they showed all the hard work paid off.”
Unsung hero: B-A offensive lineman Evan Pellegrine.
Lovrich on Pellegrine: “He’s our center, and the defensive tackle they have is 6-foot-6, 330 pounds. He out-weighs Evan by 50 pounds, but Evan did a great job against him. He knew it was going to be a challenge. He stepped up to that challenge and played a great game on both the offensive and defensive sides.”
Glendale coach Spank Trexler: “Obviously, Bellwood’s the cream of the ICC, along with a couple other teams. We knew it would be a tough challenge. They have a great program, great coaching staff. We just have to stay focused and get better every day.”
Notable: After losing a fumble on the opening possession of the game, Bellwood scored touchdowns all seven times it had the ball after that. Trevor Miller completed 7-of-12 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown. Bellwood starters were taken out of the game early in the third quarter after Plank’s second TD of the game put the Blue Devils up 34-0.
Records: Bellwood 2-0: Glendale 1-1.
Next Friday: B-A hosts Juniata Valley. Glendale hosts Everett.

Glendale RB's tough on Pirates by John Fleck
WILLIAMSBURG — Glendale dominated Williamsburg on the stat sheet Friday night, but thanks to several big plays from Jahmarea Wansley, the Blue Pirates trailed by just six midway through the fourth quarter.
An interception and long run on back-to-back plays ended Williamsburg’s comeback bid, however, and the Vikings went on to a 26-14 win Friday night at Veterans Memorial Field.
Glendale had two backs rush for over 100 yards and another gain 84 to finish with 374 yards on the ground. Williamsburg managed just 125 yards of total offense and turned the ball over five times.
The game was also the head coaching debut for both Glendale’s Spank Trexler and Williamsburg’s Ryan Hileman.
Plays of the game: With 7:15 left in the game, Williamsburg had the ball at the Glendale 16 down six points when Seth Dudurich snuffed out the drive with an interception. Tristan Rutter broke off a 76-yard touchdown on the next play to put Glendale up 26-14.
Players of the game: Dudurich ran for 121 yards on 14 carries and made a fourth-quarter interception to end Williamsburg’s potential game-winning drive. Rutter ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.
Unsung hero: Glendale center Tim Williams recovered two fumbles.
Most vital statistic: Williamsburg had five turnovers.
Glendale coach Spank Trexler: “We try to wear the other team down. We’re blessed with a lot of size on the line and in the backfield. We have a lot of wrestlers that like the physical part of it and gives us a very punishing style.
Williamsburg coach Ryan Hileman: “It’s hard to overcome turnovers. We weathered them at first. That last one kind of broke our backs. We had hit the slant earlier and were looking to hit again. It was just an overthrow. We wish we could have it back, but you just don’t get that back.”
Notable: Wansley accounted for 212 all-purpose yards. The 5-foot-10 junior had 62 yards rushing, 38 yards receiving, 21 yards passing and 91 return yards. His 77-yard return of the opening kickoff set up the Blue Pirates first touchdown, which came on the team’s first offensive play from scrimmage. Williamsburg center Shane Dixon also suffered a knee injury on the play and did not return.
Records: Glendale (1-0), Williamsburg (0-1)

Vikings knock off Williamsburg

Vikings knock off Williamsburg by Jackie Yingling
WILLIAMSBURG – Glendale’s first game under new head coach Spank Trexler turned out to be a bit of a nail-biter.
The Vikings dominated the stat sheet, but midway through the fourth quarter, Williamsburg was down just six and had the ball at the Glendale 16.
Seth Dudurich snuffed out the Blue Pirates’ rally with an interception, and Tristan Rutter ripped off a 76-yard touchdown run on the next play to help the Vikings knock off Williamsburg 26-14 Friday night at Veterans Memorial Field.
The Vikings dominated both lines. The team’s big, bruising backs running behind a big offensive line rolled up 374 yards rushing while limiting Williamsburg to just 30 yards rushing and 125 yards of total offense.“We try to wear the other team down,” Trexler said. “We are blessed with a lot of size on the line and in the backfield. We have a lot of wrestlers that like the physical part of it and gives us a very punishing style. We were a little one-dimensional (Friday). If we want to be successful down the road, we’ll have to put the ball in the air a little more.”
Johnston’s touchdown catch was the team’s lone completion of the night.
Lambert Palmer made a nifty, leaping interception of a Misiura pass on the first play of the second half and he threw a pair of incompletions with the team buried deep in their own end in the fourth quarter.
“We tried to be aggressive coming out of our end zone. Our special teams had given up a couple big plays earlier so we didn’t really want to punt from deep in our own end,” Trexler said. “Garret didn’t play last year. He stepped in and did a nice job running the offense.
The Vikings did have to punt, however, and Jahmarea Wansley’s 14-yard return gave Williamsburg the ball at the Glendale 16.
Dudurich’s interception on the next play quickly turned the momentum back in Glendale’s favor.
“We hit the slant a couple times earlier, and we were trying to hit again there. It was just an overthrow. It’s a play we wish we could have back,” Williamsburg coach Ryan Hileman said. “We weathered the turnovers up to that point, but that one kind of broke our backs.”
Glendale won the turnover battle five to one. The Vikings recovered three Williamsburg fumbles and intercepted two passes.
Senior center Tim Williams recovered two of the fumbles.
“Tim is like an assistant coach on the field. He made a couple plays that really picked us up,” Trexler said. “He does everything we ask of him. He’s a leader not only on the field but in the locker room and on the sidelines as well. Everybody rallies behind him.”
Glendale fell behind 6-0 25 seconds into the game. After Wansley returned the opening kickoff 77-yards, Adam Uplinger found Wes McCall open in the slot for an 8-yard touchdown pass on the team’s first offensive snap of the season.
The Vikings answered with a long drive that culminated in Johnston’s 22-yard TD catch on 4th-and-6 for a 7-6 lead then increased it to 14-6 in the second quarter when Rutter outraced the defense to the left pylon for a 1-yard score.
After Misiura’s interception to open the second half, Glendale got back two plays later on an Austen Clarkson fumble recovery.
Johnston’s 8-yard TD run capped a 10-play, 60-yard drive for a 20-6 lead.
Williamsburg immediately got back to within one score, however, when Wansley ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run on the first play following the ensuing kickoff.
Wansley finished with 212 all-purpose yards. The 5-foot-10 junior had 62 yards rushing, 38 yards receiving, 21 yards passing and 91 return yards.
“We knew he was a good athlete coming in. He’s very instinctive. Tough to tackle. When he gets the ball anything can happen,” Trexler said.
Glendale hosts Bellwood-Antis on Aug. 30.
